The quiz is a diversion, but the ten species behind it are not invented. Each is a real hominin known from real fossils, and each result is matched to a trait the fossil record actually supports — a body built for distance, a jaw built for grinding, a brain that grew late, a species known almost entirely from its DNA. Here is who you might turn out to be.

Homo erectus — the Trailblazer

The first human to leave Africa, and one of the longest-lived species in our genus: roughly 1.9 million to 110,000 years ago. Its brain grew from about 600 cc to 1,100 cc over that span. Read the full profile →

Neanderthal — the Stalwart

Cold-adapted specialists of Ice Age Europe and western Asia, 430,000 to 40,000 years ago, with braincases of 1,200–1,750 cc. They cared for injured and elderly group members over long periods, and most people with ancestry outside Africa still carry 1–2% Neanderthal DNA. Read the full profile →

A small-brained hominin (465–610 cc) that lived surprisingly recently, 335,000–236,000 years ago, alongside the earliest Homo sapiens. Australopithecus afarensis — the Free Spirit

How seriously should you take the result?

Not very — and that is the honest answer. There is no evidence that personality traits map onto extinct species, and no fossil can tell you whether its owner was patient or stubborn. What the quiz does is use a familiar format to introduce ten real hominins and the specific things that distinguish them.

The facts attached to each result are accurate and sourced from the same museum and primary literature as the rest of this site. The personality framing around them is entertainment. If a result sends you to a species page you would never otherwise have opened, it has done its job.
