The short version

I'm Bennett, a student in North Carolina, and everything here began as a string of trips. Black bears and chipped-stone points in the Carolina woods; the last wild red wolves on the coast; a cast of Lucy in a hall in New York; and, in a dim room in Los Angeles, a wall of 404 dire wolf skulls beside a mammoth the size of a bus. Somewhere in there I stopped being a tourist and started building Hominin History — a place to put the whole seven-million-year story in one spot.

Hi — I'm Bennett, the person behind Hominin History. I did not set out to build a website about human evolution. I set out, over a few years and a few plane tickets, simply to go and look — at bones, at stone, at animals that should not still exist and animals that no longer do. This is the story of those trips, and of the moment they stopped feeling like separate outings and started feeling like one long walk through deep time.

If you have ever stood in front of a fossil and felt the floor drop out from under the present moment, you already know the feeling I am trying to explain. It kept happening to me, in the Carolina backcountry and in three very different museums, until I finally did something about it.

Black bears and arrowheads in the Carolina woods

I grew up in North Carolina, which is a fine place to develop an accidental interest in the past. Black bears (Ursus americanus) still move through the state in real numbers — up in the Blue Ridge and, especially, down in the swampy coastal counties, which grow some of the largest black bears in the country. Seeing one amble across a treeline as a kid does something permanent to your sense of scale. The woods stop being scenery and start being occupied.

The other thing the Carolina woods gave up were arrowheads. Or that is what we called them — most of what people find here are older and heavier than true arrow points, dart tips and knife blades knapped long before the bow reached the Southeast. The oldest are genuinely ancient: fluted Clovis points roughly 13,000 years old, dropped by the first people to walk into this landscape at the close of the Ice Age. Holding a worked stone that someone shaped by hand that long ago is a strange kind of handshake across time. It was the first time I understood that history did not start with writing.

The rarest wolf in the world

A short drive from home is the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro, and that is where I first met a red wolf (Canis rufus). They do not look like much at first — leaner and more rust-colored than the gray wolf everyone pictures — until you learn what you are looking at. The NC Zoo is one of the anchor institutions of the Red Wolf Species Survival Plan, a captive-breeding lifeline for an animal that was declared extinct in the wild in 1980.

Then it got personal. The red wolf is the subject of one of the boldest experiments in American conservation: in 1987 the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service released captive-born wolves back onto the Albemarle Peninsula of eastern North Carolina — the flat, wet mainland just behind the Outer Banks. Driving those long refuge roads at dusk, knowing that the only wild red wolves on Earth were out there in the marsh grass — a population that has at times fallen below two dozen animals — taught me the lesson that runs through this whole site: extinction is not a chapter that closed in the Ice Age. It is happening in the county next door. Hold onto the red wolf. It comes back later, in California, wearing a different face.

Meeting Lucy in New York

A trip to New York took me to the American Museum of Natural History, and specifically to the Anne and Bernard Spitzer Hall of Human Origins. I had read about Lucy for years. Standing in front of her is different.

Lucy is a partial skeleton of Australopithecus afarensis, about 3.2 million years old, unearthed at Hadar in Ethiopia in 1974. She stood barely over a metre tall, had a brain roughly the size of a chimpanzee's — and walked upright, on two legs, more than a million years before anything we would call Homo chipped its first tool. (The bones you see in New York are a meticulous cast; the original stays in Addis Ababa.) It was the first time I saw the human story laid out not as a ladder from ape to us, but as a branching bush — a family with cousins, dead ends, and overlaps. That single idea became the backbone of the site's interactive family tree.

The tar pits: a wall of dire wolves

Then a flight to Los Angeles, and the trip that tipped me over the edge: the La Brea Tar Pits, in the middle of the city on Wilshire Boulevard, where natural asphalt has been swallowing animals for tens of thousands of years and preserving their bones by the millions. It is the richest Ice Age fossil site on the planet, and it is sitting under a park between office towers.

Inside, one display stops everyone. It is a wall — backlit, floor to ceiling — of 404 dire wolf skulls, every one of them real, every one pulled from the tar. More than four thousand individual dire wolves (Aenocyon dirus) have come out of these pits. Row after row of the same heavy-jawed skull, lit up like stained glass, is a way of showing you extinction as a quantity. I stood there far too long.

And here is where the red wolf comes back. For a century we assumed the dire wolf was simply a bigger, badder gray wolf. Then, in 2021, a team sequenced ancient DNA from these very bones and found something startling: the dire wolf was not really a wolf at all. It belonged to an ancient lineage of New World dogs that split from the ancestors of wolves, coyotes and our own pets roughly 5.7 million years ago. Its wolf-like shape was convergence — two lineages arriving at the same body from opposite ends of the family. So on one coast I had watched over a living, barely-hanging-on red wolf, and on the other I was staring at four hundred skulls of a "wolf" that was never a wolf and is gone for good. The tar pits also held the saber-toothed cat Smilodon fatalis and the enormous American lion, Panthera atrox — but it was that wall of dire wolves that I still see when I close my eyes.

The wow moment: standing under a mammoth

The other thing La Brea does is scale. I turned a corner and there it was — the towering skeleton of an American mastodon (Mammut americanum), and near it the even larger Columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi), an animal that stood around four metres at the shoulder and weighed as much as a truck. I actually said "wow" out loud, like a cartoon. You can read "elephant-sized" on a placard a hundred times and it means nothing until the ribcage is arching over your head and you understand, in your body, that these things walked here, that people saw them, that this was not so long ago.

That is the emotion I most wanted to bottle. Not a fact about the Pleistocene — a feeling of vertigo in front of it. Between the mammoth's ribs and the dire wolf wall, something clicked: the deep past is not abstract. It is physical, it is enormous, and almost nobody I knew had ever felt it.

The hand-axe on my desk

I came home from California a little obsessed. I ordered a small stack of books on human origins and early history and read them out of order and too fast. And I bought one object that still sits on my desk as I type this: an Acheulean hand-axe — the teardrop-shaped stone biface that Homo erectus and its descendants made, by the same basic design, for well over a million years. It is the longest-running tool tradition in the history of life. Hold one and your thumb finds the worked edge automatically; your hand already knows what to do with it.

That hand-axe is the whole site in miniature. Someone shaped it deliberately, with skill, hundreds of thousands of years ago, and it works its way into your hands as if no time has passed at all. I kept wanting to show it to people — to explain the branching family tree, the red wolf and the dire wolf, the mammoth in the room — and I kept running into the same problem: it was all scattered. The fossils were in Ethiopia and New York and Los Angeles, the DNA was locked in papers, the animals were in different museums a continent apart. There was no single place to walk the whole thing.

So I built Hominin History

That is what this site is: my attempt to gather the wonder into one place. At its heart is an interactive deep-time timeline I call The Long Walk — you can scroll it from the first upright apes to us. Around it sit a migration atlas built on more than 19,000 ancient-DNA records that traces where our species actually went, a side-by-side comparator for measuring any two hominins against each other, a map of the great fossil sites, and a growing library of source-backed articles.

I am not a professor. I am someone who saw a black bear, held a piece of knapped stone, drove past the last wild red wolves, met Lucy, and stood under a mammoth — and decided the rest of the story was too good to leave scattered across the country. If any of it gives you even one "wow" of your own, then the tar pits did their job, and so did I.

How I try to get it right

I'm an enthusiast, not a credentialed paleoanthropologist — so I lean hard on the people who are. Species accounts are compiled from museum sources such as the Smithsonian Human Origins Program and the Natural History Museum in London, and the comparison articles cite peer-reviewed literature.
