Homo erectus lived from about 2 million to roughly 110,000 years ago — the longest run of any human species. It was the first hominin with modern body proportions, the first to leave Africa, the first to make Acheulean handaxes, and probably the first to control fire.
Our species has existed for about 300,000 years. Homo erectus lasted close to two million. If longevity is the measure of evolutionary success, no human species comes close — and by that yardstick we are still an experiment in progress.
Homo erectus is also the hinge of the human story. Before it, hominins were small-bodied, small-brained African apes that happened to walk upright. After it, humans were long-legged endurance walkers with big bodies, big brains, standardised tools and a range that stretched from southern Africa to the Java Sea.

Discovery: the fossil hunter who went looking on purpose
Almost every famous hominin was found by accident. Homo erectus was not. In 1887 the Dutch anatomist Eugène Dubois gave up a university post, joined the colonial medical service to get himself posted to the Dutch East Indies, and went looking for the “missing link” on the theory that apes and humans shared a tropical Asian origin. In 1891–92, on the banks of the Solo River at Trinil, Java, he found a skullcap, a femur and a tooth. He named the creature Pithecanthropus erectus — upright ape-man. Java Man.
He was ridiculed for a generation. Then in the 1920s and 30s, excavations at Zhoukoudian near Beijing produced dozens of individuals of “Peking Man,” confirming the type. Those original Chinese fossils were lost in 1941 while being evacuated ahead of the Japanese advance and have never been recovered; only casts and Franz Weidenreich’s meticulous descriptions survive.
A new kind of body
The single biggest change Homo erectus introduced was not the skull — it was the body below it. Australopiths like Lucy had long arms, short legs, flaring rib cages and a big gut. Homo erectus had long legs, shorter arms, a narrow waist, a barrel chest and a reduced gut: essentially the human body plan.
The clearest evidence is Turkana Boy (KNM-WT 15000), an adolescent found at Nariokotome, Kenya in 1984 and dated to about 1.5–1.6 million years ago. He is the most complete early Homo skeleton ever found. He stood about 1.6 metres as a boy and would likely have reached roughly 1.65–1.8 m as an adult, depending on which growth model you accept.
That body is built for covering ground in the heat: long stride, narrow hips, sweat-cooled skin over largely hairless flesh. It is the anatomy of an animal that walks all day.
The first hominin out of Africa
The Dmanisi site in Georgia has produced five crania dated to about 1.8 million years ago — hominins already outside Africa within a couple of hundred thousand years of the species appearing. The Dmanisi skulls are startlingly small-brained (Skull 5, D4500, is just 546 cc) and startlingly variable, which is why some researchers separate them as Homo erectus georgicus and others use them to argue that early Homo was one wide-ranging, highly variable species.
From there the record runs east: Sangiran and Trinil in Java by roughly 1.5–1.6 million years ago, Zhoukoudian in northern China by around 780,000. This is Out of Africa I — a dispersal entirely separate from, and vastly older than, the modern human expansion 60,000 years ago.
Handaxes, fire and meat
Around 1.76 million years ago, at Kokiselei 4 in West Turkana, someone made a teardrop-shaped handaxe worked on both faces to a deliberate, symmetrical form. The Acheulean handaxe is the first tool that plainly required a mental template held in the mind before the first blow. Its design then barely changed for over a million years — an extraordinary stretch of technological conservatism.
Evidence for controlled fire is older and messier than most summaries admit, but burnt bone and ashed plant material in a deep chamber at Wonderwerk Cave, South Africa, dated to about 1 million years ago, makes a strong case that Homo erectus used it. Richard Wrangham’s “cooking hypothesis” argues that cooked food is precisely what funded the species’ bigger brain and smaller gut — suggestive, but not yet conclusive.
Cut-marked bones from Koobi Fora and elsewhere confirm regular access to large-animal carcasses, whether hunted or aggressively scavenged. Meat is calorie-dense, and dense calories are what a growing brain requires.
Did Homo erectus cross open water?
One of the most tantalising questions in the field. Stone tools on Flores date to about 1 million years ago, and hominin fossils from Mata Menge to 700,000 — and Flores lies east of the Wallace Line, meaning it was never connected to the Asian mainland. Something got across a sea barrier. Whether that means rafts, or a freak accident on a storm-torn mat of vegetation, is genuinely unknown. Those Flores hominins are the best candidate ancestors for Homo floresiensis, the “hobbit.”
How did it end?
In Africa and Europe, Homo erectus populations appear to grade into later forms — Homo antecessor, Homo heidelbergensis, and eventually Neanderthals and us. That is less an extinction than a transformation.
In Asia it really did end. A 2020 reassessment of the Ngandong terrace on the Solo River, Java, dated the last known Homo erectus fossils to between 117,000 and 108,000 years ago. By then modern humans were already leaving Africa. Two very different kinds of human were on Earth at the same time, at opposite ends of the same landmass.
