As Homo erectus spread from Africa to Java and China, it lived beside 110-kilogram hyenas, sabre-toothed cats, the three-metre ape Gigantopithecus, and elephants ranging from giants to island dwarfs — sometimes as their hunter, sometimes as their prey.
Homo erectus was the first member of our genus to walk out of Africa, and over nearly two million years it colonised landscapes from the Caucasus to the tropics of Java. Everywhere it went, it shared the country with animals stranger, and often far larger, than anything alive today.
A pioneer among giants
By about 1.8 million years ago erectus had reached Dmanisi in Georgia; later populations spread to Zhoukoudian near Beijing (the famous ‘Peking Man’) and to Sangiran and Trinil on Java. Each region had its own cast of predators and prey, but the theme was constant: a medium-sized, tool-using hominin making a living amid heavyweight competition.

Hunter or hunted at Zhoukoudian?
For decades the burned bones and ash at Zhoukoudian were read as proof that Peking Man cooked in the cave. A closer look told a darker story. Many of the erectus bones there show damage consistent with the jaws of the giant hyena Pachycrocuta, and researchers now think the cave was, at least partly, a hyena den where erectus was on the menu.
The giant ape next door
In the bamboo forests of southern China and Southeast Asia, erectus shared the land with Gigantopithecus blacki, known only from thousands of teeth and a few massive jaws. Standing perhaps three metres tall, it was a peaceful bamboo-eater rather than a rival hunter — but a vivid reminder that our ancestor was not the biggest primate in its world. Gigantopithecus died out around 200,000–100,000 years ago as forests gave way to grassland.
Elephants of every size
Wherever erectus and its descendants went in Asia, they met Stegodon. On isolated islands these elephants shrank dramatically — the dwarf Stegodon of Flores was hunted by erectus’s tiny relative, Homo floresiensis. To the west, the enormous straight-tusked elephant Palaeoloxodon browsed the forests that later Europeans would hunt.
Why it matters
Homo erectus thrived for well over a million years across a bewildering variety of ecosystems and animal communities. That flexibility — helped by stone tools and, increasingly, fire — is what let a modest primate shift from occasional prey toward confident predator. On the human evolution timeline, adaptability, not size, was our ancestors’ edge.

Did Homo erectus hunt large animals?
Yes. Cut-marked bones at several sites show Homo erectus butchered large game, and it very likely used fire. But it also scavenged, and at some sites it was itself prey, so it lived as both hunter and hunted.
Did Homo erectus meet Gigantopithecus?
They overlapped in southern China and Southeast Asia and shared the same forests, so encounters were likely. There is no fossil evidence of direct interaction, but the two were contemporaries for a long stretch.
