Most researchers now accept that Neanderthals intentionally buried at least some of their dead, based on re-excavations at La Chapelle-aux-Saints, La Ferrassie and Shanidar. What remains unsupported is the romantic version: there is no convincing evidence of grave goods or floral offerings.
In 1908, three priests excavating a small cave at La Chapelle-aux-Saints in southwest France found a nearly complete Neanderthal skeleton lying in a shallow depression. They said it had been buried deliberately. The claim shaped a century of popular imagery: Neanderthals as mourners, laying their dead to rest.
Then in 1989 the archaeologist Robert Gargett published a systematic demolition of every alleged Neanderthal burial, arguing that natural processes — roof collapse, sediment slumping, animals scraping out hollows — could explain all of them. The field went quiet on the subject for years.
It has since come back, and the current picture is more careful, better evidenced, and more interesting than either extreme.
What would count as proof?
The question is not “is the skeleton in the ground” but “did someone put it there on purpose”. Archaeologists look for a specific bundle of signals:
- A dug feature. A pit whose shape cuts across natural sediment layers, rather than following them.
- Sediment mismatch. Fill inside the pit that differs from the surrounding deposit — the sign of material moved and put back.
- Skeletal completeness and articulation. Bones still in anatomical position mean the body was covered before it decomposed or was scattered.
- No carnivore damage. An exposed corpse gets gnawed. Clean bones imply rapid covering.
- Low weathering. Bone left on a surface cracks and flakes. Fresh-looking cortical surfaces mean quick burial.
- Body position. Deliberate, repeated postures — flexed limbs, consistent orientation — across multiple individuals at one site.
The sites that make the case
La Chapelle-aux-Saints, France (~50,000 years)
A team led by William Rendu re-excavated the site between 1999 and 2012 and published in PNAS in 2014. They found that the depression was a genuine dug pit, not a natural hollow; that the Neanderthal’s bones showed almost no weathering or carnivore tooth marks, while bison and reindeer bones from the same layers showed plenty of both. The most economical explanation is rapid, intentional covering.
La Ferrassie, France (~45,000–40,000 years)
La Ferrassie has produced eight Neanderthal individuals, including several infants and children, in what looks like repeated use of one place for the dead. In 2020, Antoine Balzeau’s team re-examined La Ferrassie 8, a roughly two-year-old child excavated in the 1970s, using the original field notes alongside new sediment analysis. The bones were unweathered and barely disturbed, the skeleton lay against the natural slope of the deposit rather than with it, and the associated sediments were younger than the surrounding layer. All three point to a dug grave.
Kebara Cave, Israel (~60,000 years)
Kebara 2 is one of the most complete Neanderthal postcranial skeletons known, lying on its back with arms folded over the chest. It preserves a hyoid bone — the small horseshoe bone that anchors the tongue, and a key piece of evidence in debates about Neanderthal speech. Curiously, the skull is missing while the mandible is present, which some researchers interpret as deliberate later removal of the head from a known grave.
Shanidar Cave, Iraq
Shanidar is the most famous and most contested. Ralph Solecki’s 1950s excavations recovered ten individuals. Around Shanidar 4, soil samples contained dense clumps of pollen from flowering plants, which Solecki interpreted as flowers laid on the grave — the “flower burial” that became a fixture of popular writing.
That interpretation has not held up well. Later work showed that burrowing solitary bees of the genus Osmia, along with rodents such as the Persian jird, routinely introduce pollen clumps into cave sediments. The flowers are probably not real.
The burials, however, look increasingly real. New excavations from 2014 onward, led by Emma Pomeroy and Graeme Barker, uncovered Shanidar Z: an articulated upper body, arm bent with the hand under the head, lying in the same cluster as Solecki’s finds and associated with a prominent upright rock that may have served as a marker. Multiple individuals deposited in the same restricted spot over time is difficult to attribute to accident.
What about grave goods?
This is where the evidence thins out. There is no widely accepted case of a Neanderthal grave good — no tool or ornament that can be shown to have been deliberately placed with a body rather than simply present in the surrounding sediment, which is full of tools and bones anyway.
The contrast with early modern humans is sharp. At Qafzeh in Israel, roughly 100,000 years ago, an adolescent was buried with a red deer’s antlers held against the chest, and other burials there involve red ochre. At Sunghir in Russia, 34,000-year-old burials contain tens of thousands of drilled mammoth ivory beads, representing thousands of hours of labour. Nothing at a Neanderthal site approaches that.
How does this compare with other hominins?
Neanderthals are not alone in the argument. The Sima de los Huesos in Spain contains at least 28 pre-Neanderthal individuals at the bottom of a 13-metre shaft, dated to around 430,000 years ago, with a single beautifully made quartzite handaxe nicknamed “Excalibur” among them. Deliberate deposition of bodies is one reading; a natural trap is another.
More recently, Lee Berger’s team has claimed that Homo naledi deliberately buried its dead in the Rising Star cave system some 240,000 years ago — with a brain a third the size of ours. That claim has met substantial and continuing criticism over the sedimentary evidence, and remains unsettled.
What it probably means
The defensible position: Neanderthals sometimes buried their dead, at particular sites, over tens of thousands of years, and they did so often enough at places like La Ferrassie and Shanidar that accident is a poor explanation. It was not universal — most Neanderthal remains are fragmentary and scattered, and some show cut marks consistent with cannibalism.
What we cannot read from a pit is what they were thinking. Burial can express grief, or a belief about death, or simple practicality: a decomposing body in a cave you plan to keep living in attracts scavengers and disease. These motives are not mutually exclusive, and the archaeology cannot separate them.
What it does establish is that Neanderthals treated their dead as something other than refuse — which is a meaningful statement about a species long caricatured as brutish.

Did Neanderthals bury their dead?
